Today I am beginning a series devoted to the 7 deadly sins. I came across the movie "Seven" in my movie stack and decided to give it a try. Today's image is devoted to greed. I am sure it would have been more powerful if the bills were of larger denomination but you get the idea.... Taken from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_deadly_sins#Greed_.28Latin.2C_avaritia.29 Greed (Latin, avaritia) Main articles: Greed (treachery, covetousness) Greed is, like Lust and Gluttony, a sin of excess. However, Greed (as seen by the Church) applied to the acquisition of wealth in particular. Thomas Aquinas wrote that Greed was "a sin against God, just as all mortal sins, in as much as man condemns things eternal for the sake of temporal things." In Dante's Purgatory, the penitents were bound and laid face down on the ground for having concentrated too much on earthly thoughts. "Avarice" is more of a blanket term that can describe many other examples of sinful behavior. These include disloyalty, deliberate betrayal, or treason, especially for personal gain, for example through bribery. Scavenging and hoarding of materials or objects, theft and robbery, especially by means of violence, trickery, or manipulation of authority are all actions that may be inspired by greed. Such misdeeds can include Simony, where one profits from soliciting goods within the actual confines of a church.

@jen: Thank you, thank you Jen!
What a great idea for a series! I am feeling envy, Dawn, at your brilliance -- but, oops, isn't that one of the seven? Envy, I mean.
I think this photo is a very good illustration of greed; sometimes it's small amounts, others it's large amounts. It seems like no matter how much we have, we always want more.

@Viewfinder: That is very true, thank you for making me feel better about it! As a mom I have plenty of one's and five's handy (field trips, lunch money, etc) but I rarely ever have twenty's or higher!! ha ha Have a wonderful day!
Great idea! My question is how hard was it to get your kid to give you back ALL the money???

@eureka: It has been interesting, some of these are sensitive so I am trying not to offend anyone because everyone can relate to at least one of them. Have a great day!

@LuisRodrigues: Thank you Luis, have a wonderful day!
I know first hand how greed can make even the best person with the best intentions seem to lose focus! I can really relate to this photo on so many levels. I have been hurt many times over by greedy money hungry people!! Thanks for displaying a photo that really hits home for me and I look forward to seeing more!!!

@Lost Valley: I am glad you enjoy it, I too can feel your pain. I am having a hard time with this series because I want them to be an honest account of each category (not just the run of the mill shot) however I am afraid people will be offended by the direction I wish to proceed with. I guess we'll see.....
hey Dawn--I'm up for this series--to see how many I suffer from or relate to--billy

@bronzebilly u.k.: As I said to the above person I am really having an internal battle over this series, I want the photos to be an honest tribute to each category but I don't want to offend those that "suffer from or relate to". It made me take a look at myself on a couple of them and sometimes when the light of truth is shone on you-you may not like what you see......I am still deciding which direction to go with on a couple because of that fact so stay tuned.
Great image and lighting. Well done.
